Welcome to my virtual presentation of Beijing! With its many tourist sights and its long history, the capital of the People's Republic of China is one of the most attractive cities in the world. Even more so since Beijing hosted the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, the Summer Olympic Games of 2008.
Beijing is the second biggest city in China, and thanks to its excellent transport facilities, it is the main gateway to the country of 1.3 billion citizens.
Beijing is huge and has many attractions. Among them there are four that no tourist should miss: the Forbidden City, Tian an Men, The Summer Palace and the Great Wall. We will start our virtual video tour in the Forbidden City. Click on the picture for the first tourist video.
The Forbidden City is a giant complex. With more than 180 acres of land (almost 78 hectares), it can take several days to visit. If you do not have much time in Beijing, spend at least half a day here. If you are going to stay in Beijing for several days, you should visit the place more than once.
There is an entry fee which gives you access to the main courtyards and palaces, but if you want to visit the site in detail, you will have to buy the optional tickets. You can buy them at the main ticket office (next to the Forbidden City Gates), or inside the complex. If you are going to visit the City only once, buy the complete ticket at the main ticket office and get a discount.
The main Gate to the Forbidden City is on Tian an Men Square, where you can buy the audio guides and/or hire a local guide. I absolutely recommend taking one of the guides. If you do not want to rent a guide, at least bring a good travel guidebook. There is another entrance on the North side.
Although I had visited royal palaces in Europe and Asia before coming to Beijing, I had never seen anything so big!
The Forbidden City, with its 9,999.5 rooms, several dozens palaces and courtyards, is the biggest royal palace in the world. More than half a mile long and almost half a mile wide (1 Square km), it looks more like a city than a palace complex.
The name of the place comes from the fact that nobody except the Emperor, the Empress, the Emperor's concubines, the eunuchs, the servants and the King's guests was allowed inside the Forbidden City. Even the local firefighters were not allowed inside the complex. In case of fire, the king's servants had to put the fire out. This happened frequently, because most of the constructions were made of wood.

VIENTIANE, Jan 26 (Bernama) -- The World Peace Committee of Indonesia has agreed to present the World Peace Gong to Laos as a country of peace, security and political stability for a long period of time.
The intention was made during the President of the World Peace Committee of Indonesia, Juyoto Santany, visited in Laos and called on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongloun Sisoulith recently.
The world peace gong was found and originated in Moria mountain in Central Java (locally called as "peace"), the Republic of Indonesia, the Lao news agency (KPL) reported Friday.
It is assumed to date back to 450 years.
The world peace gong was first struck on 31 December, 2002, by an Indonesian president in Bali.
The second ring was made in Geneva, Switzerland, on February 5, 2003, by the United Nations Secretary General to mark the opening of the Second Global Summit on Peace.
The gong has also been used at the opening of important international events around the world.
Laos is the third country to receive the replica of the world peace gong from the World Peace Committee of Indonesia after China in 2004 and India in 2006.
The gong is two metres in diameter, made of bronze, weighing 150 kilogrammes.
It is expected to be presented to Laos in a formal ceremony in March.
At the cordial talks, Santany said that the presentation of the World Peace Gong was to appreciate Laos' contribution to the safeguarding of political stability and security in the region by promoting and strengthening friendly ties with neighbouring countries.
At the same time, Laos has also accomplished the national defence and construction, which ensures peace, security, political socio-economic stability in the country, and also strengthens the unity among its ethnic people and ensures the national development in the future.
Deputy Prime Minister Thongloun expressed thanks to Santany and highly valued the delegation of the World Peace Committee of Indonesia that saw the Laos' advance and significant national development of the Lao Government over the past 30 years.
"Peace and stability may not be achieved if a country does not enjoy national unity and has no correct and fair foreign policy based on the five principles of peaceful co-existence," added the Lao Deputy Prime Minister.
Now Laos has maintained diplomatic relations with 126 countries worldwide, been members of various international organisations, and signed many international treaties considered as a great contribution to the maintenance of world peace.

China is host to the world's largest population and has borders with a whopping 15 nations. Getting around this vast country is best done by air and not during national holidays when millions travel from the cities to their countryside homes for the festivities. Bicycle is the country's choice mode of transport but you can ditch two wheels for a train or bus.Travel to China - Getting There
International flights are generally routed through the airports in Shanghai or Beijing, though it is also possible to land in provincial capitals when traveling from neighboring Asian countries. Traveling by train is an excellent way to bridge the long distances between cities, but be prepared for long travel times. Buses pick up where the trains leave off. A bicycle is invaluable for getting around the city, while Shanghai, Tianjin and Beijing operate metro systems.China Things to Do

China Travel Guide
HANOI, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Lao Airlines opened a new route between the World Heritage town of Luang Prabang and Kunming, capital city of China's Yunnan province to meet the need of growing tourism in the region, Lao newspaper Vientiane Times reported Monday.
"The opening of this new route (on Jan. 5) will mean we can better meet the demand and change in the tourism industry, as more tourists become interested in traveling to the region," said the deputy director of the airline Leuy Bounbandit.
In 2007, Luang Prabang province, home to the World Heritage site, welcomed 320,000 visitors, including 195,175 foreigners, and generated tourism revenues of about 80 million U.S. dollars, said deputy head of the Provincial Tourism Administration, Khamtanh Somphanvilay.
The province is expected to receive 500,000 visitors in 2010, 650,000 visitors in 2015 and 800,000 visitors in 2020, and gain tourism revenues of more than 200 million dollars in 2020, he said.
Now, Lao Airlines operates four flights a week between Vientiane capital and Kunming. The carrier, currently having three aircraft, plans to purchase a new MA60 plane in the near future.
Lao Airlines transported 251,000 passengers in 2005, over 275,000 in 2006, and 330,000 passengers in 2007, the newspaper said.

LUANG Prabang authorities have allowed Yunnan Copper Mining, a Chinese state-owned company to construct a major luxury hotel in Nadeua village, some 5 km from the centre of the world heritage town.
Director of Luang Prabang Tourism Administration, Mr Khamphouy Phommavong, said last month that the provincial planning and investment department had signed a MoU with the company, which green lights the US$5million investment to construct the hotel complex along the road to the Kuangxi waterfall, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the province.
Mr Khamphouy, who is also a member of the temporary committee which gave the approval, said that the committee had provided 35 to 40 hectares of land, and construction would commence at the end of the year.
Deputy Director of Luang Prabang Tourism Administration, Mr Khamtan Somphanvilay, confirmed yesterday that the construction of the hotel would begin in August, and the company is preparing materials and resources.
The development would feature Lao traditional architecture to maintain the charm of the world heritage town. Inside there will be a gym, entertainment venues, health centre and sport clubs, he added.
Mr Khamtan said that the hotel would have over 200 rooms, which would welcome more visitors, in particular from neighbouring China. He said that the Chinese people now have more money and the chance to travel than ever before.
He said that the investment of Chinese companies in tourist accommodations in Luang Prabang was initiated in 2006 when Lao President, Choummaly Sayasone, visited neighbouring Yunnan province to encourage Chinese investment in Laos.
“The Yunnan authorities sent representatives to visit Luang Prabang last year and expressed interest in the area,” he said.
He said that Chinese investment in the province reflects the growing relationship between two nations.
President of Guesthouse and Hotel Association in Luang Prabang, Mr Khoun Chanthaboupha, said that it was good news for Luang Prabang and its people as there is a shortage of high-class accommodation available.
He said that guesthouses and hotels were often fully booked during the high season, at the moment Luang Prabang is overcrowded with tourists.
He said that many tourists are forced into sharing rooms if they want somewhere to sleep.
There are 178 guesthouses with 2000 rooms and 30 hotels with 600 rooms. The maximum number of tourists Luang Prabang is able to deal with is around 3000 people, according to Mr Khoun.
