Eco-tourism sustainable development in Laos

(KPL) Laos has become a world well-known destination for visitors who want to experience eco-tourism, which benefits natural and cultural heritage conservation, local socio-economic development.

Everyday, Laos and international stakeholders work towards realizing this vision. We therefore invite you to visit Laos and experience yourself the splendid bio-diversity and cultural heritage that makes Lao Eco-tourism so special and unique. The Lao People’s Democratic Republic has a low population density, unspoiled diverse ethnic lifestyles and traditions, and perhaps the richest, most extensive network of ecosystems on the Indochina Peninsula.

There are over 800 species of birds and more than 100 large mammals already identified in Laos with new species being discovered every year. Some of the more charismatic species include Tigers, Clouded Leopards, Douc Languar, Gibbons, the Irrawaddy Dolphin, Hornbills, Peafowls, Ibis, Crested Argus’ and Silver Pheasants. In place to protect and conserve these irreplaceable resources is a network of 20 Lao National Protected Areas, often cited as one of the best designed Protected Area Systems in the world. In addition to the country’s vast protected forests and aquatic resources, Laos has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Ancient City of Luang Prabang and the pre-Angkorian Vat Phou Temple Complex. There is also the mysterious Plain of Jars, a forthcoming World Heritage Site that has significant archaeological, historical and natural values. The Lao system of 20 National Protected Areas covers nearly 14% of the country’s land and is recognized as one of the best designed protected areas systems in the world. With large tracts of tropical monsoon forest, diverse wildlife populations, bizarre karst limestone formations and many ethnic minority groups, Laos’ protected areas have an abundance of eco-tourism attractions.

Although most Lao protected areas are remote and difficult to reach, there are many existing opportunities for eco-tourism activities such as trekking, kayaking, bird watching and camping that allow you to experience first-hand the country’s magnificent natural and cultural diversity.

Eager to position Laos as a premier eco-tourism destination, the Lao National Tourism Administration, related government agencies and the private sector are working hard to realize the ambitious vision put forth in the country’s National Eco-tourism Strategy and Action Plan. Enshrined in this plan are the following principles:

• Decrease environmental and cultural impacts.
Increase awareness of the importance of the ethnic groups and biological diversity.
• Promote responsible business practices, which cooperate closely with local authorities and people to support poverty alleviation and deliver conservation benefits.
• Provide a source of income to conserve, sustain and manage the Lao protected area network and cultural heritage sites.
• Emphasize the need for tourism zoning and management plans for sites that will be developed as eco-tourism-destinations.
• Use environmental and social base-line data, as well as long term monitoring programs, to assess and minimize negative impacts.
• Maximize the benefits for the Lao national economy especially local businesses and people living in and around the protected areas.
• Ensure that tourism does not exceed the social and economic limits as determined by researchers working in conjunction with local residents.
• Promote local styles of architecture that are developed in harmony with Lao culture and environment, that use local materials, minimize energy consumption and conserve local plants and wildlife.

Photo: The World Peace Committee of Indonesia presented the World Peace Gong to India 2006.

VIENTIANE, Jan 26 (Bernama) -- The World Peace Committee of Indonesia has agreed to present the World Peace Gong to Laos as a country of peace, security and political stability for a long period of time.

The intention was made during the President of the World Peace Committee of Indonesia, Juyoto Santany, visited in Laos and called on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongloun Sisoulith recently.

The world peace gong was found and originated in Moria mountain in Central Java (locally called as "peace"), the Republic of Indonesia, the Lao news agency (KPL) reported Friday.

It is assumed to date back to 450 years.

The world peace gong was first struck on 31 December, 2002, by an Indonesian president in Bali.

The second ring was made in Geneva, Switzerland, on February 5, 2003, by the United Nations Secretary General to mark the opening of the Second Global Summit on Peace.

The gong has also been used at the opening of important international events around the world.

Laos is the third country to receive the replica of the world peace gong from the World Peace Committee of Indonesia after China in 2004 and India in 2006.

The gong is two metres in diameter, made of bronze, weighing 150 kilogrammes.

It is expected to be presented to Laos in a formal ceremony in March.

At the cordial talks, Santany said that the presentation of the World Peace Gong was to appreciate Laos' contribution to the safeguarding of political stability and security in the region by promoting and strengthening friendly ties with neighbouring countries.

At the same time, Laos has also accomplished the national defence and construction, which ensures peace, security, political socio-economic stability in the country, and also strengthens the unity among its ethnic people and ensures the national development in the future.

Deputy Prime Minister Thongloun expressed thanks to Santany and highly valued the delegation of the World Peace Committee of Indonesia that saw the Laos' advance and significant national development of the Lao Government over the past 30 years.

"Peace and stability may not be achieved if a country does not enjoy national unity and has no correct and fair foreign policy based on the five principles of peaceful co-existence," added the Lao Deputy Prime Minister.

Now Laos has maintained diplomatic relations with 126 countries worldwide, been members of various international organisations, and signed many international treaties considered as a great contribution to the maintenance of world peace.

Laos To Receive World Peace Gong For World Peace Efforts

The authorities of Attapeu province are developing the road to the Nongfa (blue pond) area, which is one of the more well-known tourist attractions in the province.

An official from the Provincial Tourism Office, Mr Khamphanh Boun-nhavongsy, said last Friday that the road to Nongfa is a priority in upgrading the living standards of people in rural areas, particularly in Sanxay district.

“Work on the road started a few months ago and is scheduled for completion before the rainy season begins this year,” he said.

Sanxay is an impoverished mountainous district in this southern province and borders Ngoc Hoi district in Kon Tum province, Vietnam . The condition of the roads generally in this district is poor, and transportation is difficult in the rainy season.

The upgrading will cover a 70km long stretch of muddy track that is part of Road No 18B. Sanxay district lies at the Km100 point on this road and is about 170 km from the main provincial town.

Mr Khamphanh said the rebuilding of the road from Vangtard village to Nongfa is part of a programme of comprehensive road development and will link the three villages of Vangtard-noi, Vangtard-kang and Vangtard-nhai.

He said the provincial tourism office expects that the number of local and foreign visitors to Attapeu will increase when the road network is properly established.

“Tourism in Attapeu has not really taken off. We don't advertise a lot, but there are many places here of historical and natural interest, such as Vat That in Xaysettha district and Nongfa in Sanxay district.”

He pointed out that most potential tourist sites don't have adequate road access yet. “There are many difficulties in getting around the province, which we are working on, particularly roads to tourist sites and remote areas.

Attapeu province is more than 800 km by road from Vientiane , and lies on the 1,000-km Laos-Vietnam border. The road from Vientiane to the province is newly built and in good condition.

Managers of low-cost Malaysian airline AirAsia are satisfied with the number of passengers it has carried in over a month since it opened a new direct flight between Vientiane and Kuala Lumpur.

The airline's statio n manager in Vientiane , Mr Anolak Kingsada, said on Monday that the number of passengers travelling with the airline between the two cities had been large enough and steady since the airline began the flight in December.

He was speaking to Vientiane Times after the airline held a concert last week to celebrate its launch in Vientiane .

Mr Anolak said the number of passengers travelling with the airline ranged from 100 to 150 on each flight, below the full seat capacity of 180.

Most of the passengers are Malaysian business owners and tourists from Malaysia and other countries; only 20 percent are Lao, he said.

Mr Anolak said that the airline was planning to launch marketing campaigns to attract more passengers, especially those who want to travel to Singapore , Indonesia and the Philippines , and can get a connecting flight at KL airport.

He said the flight to Bangkok was more expensive than the Vientiane-Kuala Lumpur roundtrip, which cost from US$120 to US$170, depending on the day.

He also said the airline would invite Malaysian journalists to visit Laos next month to report on tourist sites in the country, as a way of encouraging Malaysian tourists to visit Laos and increase the number of passengers tra velling with the airline.

“There will be also an official launching ceremony of the airline's business in Laos ,” he said.

The decision of AirAsia to open the Vientiane-Kuala Lumpur route was the second attempt at improving transportation between Laos and Malaysia ; the first airline to run flights between the two countries, Malaysian Airlines, stopped operations in 1998 due to the Asian financial crisis, which hurt the tourism industry and discouraged investment in the region.

Director General of the Lao Aviation Department Yakua Lopangkao said the decision to resume flights from Kuala Lumpur to Vientiane had been due to the growing relations and cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the areas of tourism and business.

Malaysia is the ninth largest investor in Laos , with interests mainly in hotels and hydropower facilities, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

AirAsia operates three flights a week, on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with more planned for the future, possibly in the form of daily flights to meet the growing demands of tourists coming to Laos.

Local and international airlines operate direct flights from Laos to China , Cambodia , Vietnam , Thailand and Malaysia.

Laos is "musts" for backpackers 2008 !!!

As the world gets wise to warming and brave new travelers embrace low impact lifestyles, green travel has become one of the fastest growing segments of the tourism industry.

Despite its rap as a collection of chic spas for wealthy, guilt-addled liberals who shell out $4,000 to commune with gorillas, green travel isn’t about giving a tour operator a month’s salary for some Disney-like attraction or consumer experience.

Traveling green is about finding and supporting destinations that have seen the light, and are already working to green-up their tourist offerings.

Seeking out green places to travel isn’t all that hard. Even New York City offers the possibility of an ecologically responsible vacation. Many travelers can get to New York by train, removing the need for a high-impact airplane ride. A tiny hotel room in SoHo uses less electricity than a deluxe suite in Aspen.

Plus, New York is a city built for walking, with solid public transport to boot. Time Out recently named New York the perfect place to “be green without doing crap.”

Here are 5 more eco-friendly destinations to put on your travel radar:

Luang Prabang, Laos

The Lao People’s Democratic Republic has made it their mission to bring this Southeast Asian country (which is landlocked by Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand) to the forefront of tourism. It’s working - Laos was #1 on the New York Times’ list of places to go in 2008.

However, the Lao government is aiming to increase tourism sustainably so as to protect their native wildlife, lush land and clean rivers, and preserve their two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Ancient City of Luang Prabang and pre-Angkorian Vat Phou Temple Complex. Another Heritage Site-to-be is the Plain of Jars in the highlands of north-central Laos.

The Lao National Tourism Administration has a dozen award-winning eco-tourism projects currently in development, spreading country wide to encourage smaller provinces to set up sustainable tourism, help protect over-exposed areas, and begin programs such as homestays, eco-treks, and local art exhibitions.

What’s Lao for “rocking it?”

Mjølfjell, Norway

Norway is so eco-conscious it balks when a marketer calls a Prius or Tesla green.

While other European countries have aimed to cut their carbon emissions by 20% by 2020, Norway has upped the ante to 30%. Norway is also helping China come up with ways to combat climate change.

Get out of Oslo and head into the mountains and you’ll see a lot of sustainable housing, including the Mjolfjell Inn and Youth Hostel .

A destination in and of itself, the inn offers the standard outdoor fare (skiing, horseback riding, even a wildlife survival course) and also produces its own electricity.

Not bad for the world’s #5 oil exporter.

Belize City, Belize

Home to the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, Belize is deeply committed to eco-tourism. Offshore, Belize boasts a number of cayes, some of which have been turned into eco-resorts, but others that remain pristine homes for birds, lizards and marine life.

Whale watching is a popular attraction here, as is mountain biking, horseback riding, and cave tubing. Go outside of the sandy city into the Mountain Pine Ridge Area and Maya Mountains, which have amazingly-preserved Mayan ruins. You’ll also find plenty of local artists and artisans to support in town.

While the Caribbean and Latin America are full of eco-tours and spas, you can also appreciate their beauty and natural preservation by traveling independently. Be sure to check out the preservations in Tobago (Trinidad’s less commercialized sister), the diverse terrain of Guadeloupe, and the stunning rainforests of Costa Rica.

Zurich, Switzerland

Voted the city with the highest quality of life in the world, Zurich was also recently ranked by Forbes as number 8 on their list of Top 10 Cleanest Cities.

Voted the city with the highest quality of life in the world, Zurich was also recently ranked by Forbes as number 8 on their list of Top 10 Cleanest Cities.

The city’s public transportation works like clockwork (no pun intended) to the point where very few residents own cars. There is also a large local foods industry, including cheeses that will make your deli’s Swiss cheese taste like plastic.

The world’s first four chocolate makers were also all Swiss, so you can take comfort in knowing you’re supporting local growers with those truffles and hot chocolates.

I single out Zurich here, but the rest of Switzerland is great for those who want to reduce their carbon footprint while still traveling Europe. Not only do you get the Alps and clean living, you can explore areas heavily influenced by the Germans, French, and Italians.

Thenmala, India

Surprised?

Even though India has some of the most polluted cities in the world, there are some areas that are working to green their environment. While other regions try to slap an “eco-tourism” label on what is really just nature tourism (“Over there is a rare flower,” “Look up there at the tree,” “Check out the elephant,” and back on the bus), Thenmala is taking green travel to heart.

The local Thenmala government, tourism office, and irrigation department are teaming up with residents to to make green tourism a coordinated effort. The best part? You’ll not only get to visit the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary (part rainforest, part deciduous forest), but the tour guides are local youths who are trained in sustainable tourism. Now that’s something to feel good about.

Of course, there’s more than just this Fab Five. In fact, you can find plenty of eco-friendly destinations (from the transportation to lodgings to the cocktail hour) on every continent.

Modeled after the successful low fare airlines such as the US-based Southwest Airlines and Dublin-based Ryanair.

The Regional Head of Commercial, AirAsia Kathleen Tan said, “There is a talent demand for this route to be established from the first day we started the airline, and now to see us launching direct flights to Vientiane is like a missing jigsaw puzzle to be fitted into the AirAsia chapter. We are now a truly ASEAN airline, covering all the 10 countries serving over 80 routes within the region.”

“We strongly believe that our amazing low fares will help stimulate travel in Laos and its surrounding areas especially tapping the backpacking travelers looking for an adventurous trail through Indochina and Thailand. We are also very happy to be able to serve the Malaysians working in Laos who have been very excited with our announcement. We trust our entry into Laos will further strengthen our position as the preferred airline of the region in enabling more people to fly,” added Kathlen.

You can now fly from Malaysia to Laos by Air asia !

The powerhouse of the Far East, China offers visitors burgeoning metropolises, myriad cultures and ancient architecture like the Forbidden Palace and the vast Terracotta Army. Millennia-old traditions are still observed in the countryside, while cities like Beijing and Shanghai boast some of the most modern infrastructure in the world.

China is host to the world's largest population and has borders with a whopping 15 nations. Getting around this vast country is best done by air and not during national holidays when millions travel from the cities to their countryside homes for the festivities. Bicycle is the country's choice mode of transport but you can ditch two wheels for a train or bus.

Travel to China - Getting There

International flights are generally routed through the airports in Shanghai or Beijing, though it is also possible to land in provincial capitals when traveling from neighboring Asian countries. Traveling by train is an excellent way to bridge the long distances between cities, but be prepared for long travel times. Buses pick up where the trains leave off. A bicycle is invaluable for getting around the city, while Shanghai, Tianjin and Beijing operate metro systems.

China Travel Guide

Laos is listed as no. 1 of the world's top 53 tourist destinations for 2008 by the New York Times and one of the cheapest destinations 2007 by famous MSN travel magazine. This time, Laos is listed in the top 5 Soon-to-Be White Hot Tourist Destinations in the world by famous ABC magazine together with Bhutan, Mosco, Kazakhstan and Nicaragua.

Belows are the details:

Venturing off the beaten path is adventure enough for some, but beating down the path itself is for a special breed. For these alpha tourists, the joy of travel is in getting there before the people who wear Mickey Mouse sweatshirts do.

These destinations are poised to become vacation hot spots in the next few years but for now are still ripe for path-beaters to explore. You might have trouble getting around -- or even to -- your destination without a bit of the language or a local friend to help you out, but good stories are what alpha tourists bring home -- not T-shirts.

Laos
Adventure-seekers have already trailed Vietnam and Cambodia.

And while Laos has seen a couple of upscale hotels pop up -- like the Residence Phou Vao and its infinity pool -- there's still plenty of territory with little Western influence.

Though 10 percent of the country lives in the capital city, Vietaine, its lack of modern architecture has preserved an Asian village feel -- though the gilded temples are offset by French colonial architecture.

Don't Miss:
Mekong River: Charter a teak houseboat and float through the countryside along Southeast Asia's longest river. Tours range from three to 18 days and must be booked in advance.

Wat Phou: Six kilometers from the Mekong in southern Laos, this ruined Khmer temple complex dates back to the eleventh century. The name translates to "temple on the mountain," as it sits at the base of Mt. Phu Kao.

Luang Prabang: You can walk just about anywhere in this tiny mountain town, though bikes are available for a cheap day rate. Flanked by mountains and bisected by the Mekong River, the scenery is beautiful as its Royal Palace Museum, once the home of the king before communist takeover.

Kuang Si Falls: Find a day's worth of swimming, river hiking and picnicking at these beautiful waterfalls, just about an hour by boat or tuk-tuk from Luang Prabang. Under the jungle canopy, the climate is quite a bit cooler than in the nearby city.

Go Jakarta: How to appreciate the ‘Big Durian’
By: Pete Prinyaroje

Colossal chaos under a blanket of pollution. That is the common perception of Jakarta. But much like its nickname ‘The Big Durian’, this bustling Southeast Asian metropolis may turn your nose at first, buts its rich culture, tremendously friendly residents and historical charm are so full of flavor, they soon become addictive. Let me take you on a fruitful journey into the heart of this fabulous, bewildering city.

If you’re interesting to travel to Indonesia, Jakarta is simply too massive to explore without fragmenting your experience into specific things to do. Here is our suggestion list:

• Be seen in the trendy suburb of Kemang. With its selection of boutiques, fine dining and drinking lounges, this is the place to see and be seen.

• Visit the phallic-shaped, flame-lit national monument (MONAS) otherwise known as Suharto’s “last erection”.

• Sojourn into the Thousand Islands. The further you venture away from the city, the more pristine the water and vibrant the wildlife. Check out Pulau Sepa, Pantara and Pelangi for the best diving and snorkeling, or if you can, make friends with a billionaire who owns one of the islands!

• Shop at Plaza Senayan (Pondok Indah) SEA’s second largest shopping mall

• Traipse around Old Jakarta and see the Museum Wayang (puppet museum)

• Stay in absolute style at the Mandarin Oriental or designer hotel Kemang Icon

• Go clubbing at the upscale Dragon Fly and the internationally famous, 24 hour pumpin’, Stadium

• Munch at restaurants with local cuisine to die for, such as Dapur Babah, Pendoka Kemang or Lara Djonggrang

• Dream on at Jalan Taman Impian Jaya Ancol themepark

Follow these trip advices, and your holidays in Jakarta could be a delightful vacation after all.

Going To Jakarta - an Asian Travel guide

Hiring a motorbike in Vung Tau is quite easy. As we disembarked the hydrofoil, a man offered to lend us his motorbike for two days for VND200,000. After some bargaining, the price dropped to VND120,000.

We started the journey early the following day. We left Vung Tau behind as we crossed the Cua Lap Bridge toward Phuoc Tinh Commune in Long Dien District. Previously, when tourists traveled from Vung Tau to Minh Dam base or Long Hai, they had to take a roundabout route through Ba Ria. However, the journey today was only half the distance due to newly built roads.

Riding along the coastal road to Minh Dam, we were thrilled by the beautiful scenery, especially the sections of road straddled by mountains and beaches. The road is planted with white and pink cherry blossoms. According to locals, the road is most beautiful in the springtime when the trees are in bloom.

Minh Dam is located in the Chau Long-Chau Vien Mountains on the southeast side of Long Dat District. Minh Dam reaches 355 meters and extends eight kilometers. The mountains were renamed in 1948 after Minh and Dam, two revolutionary martyrs in the liberation troops.

The mountain is bordered on three sides by the sea and has many natural caves and fresh spring water. The mountain served as the military base for the liberation troop against the French and the Americans.

The base is comprised of four main sections - Da Che (split rock), Gieng Gach Pagoda, Chau Vien and Da Giang. Da Che is where important troops were stationed during the war. Gieng Gach Pagoda is located on the north side of the mountain. It is named after an ancient pagoda that was completely destroyed. Chau Vien, the west side of the mountain provided shelter for the army medical corps and security units, while Da Giang is located on the foot of the mountain. Da Giang no longer exists today.

During the two wars, Minh Dam suffered from intense bombing. In fact, bullet holes still remain on the mountain.

We also visited Bach Van Cavern and Bach Van Temple, remnants of Cao Dai religion. We spent two hours exploring the base's caves and climbing to the cavern and the temple where we were able to see a view of the beaches of Long Hai and the coastal road. While we explored the sites, we caught glimpses of wild squirrels and monkeys.

Without enough time to visit near by sites like Monkey Pagoda, we left the base with regret. On our ride back to Vung Tau, we passed by temples, resorts, crescent-shaped beaches and the Co Temple.

Chairman of the Lao National Tourism Administration Somphong Mongkhonvilay urged the government, the private sector and others working in the tourist industry to work more closely to improve tourism services nationwide, at a meeting on Fri day in Vientiane.

Speaking at a meeting held to discuss proposals for the development of the tourism industry in 2008, and the Elephant Festival to be held from February 15 to 17 in Paklai district, Xayaboury province, Mr Somphong praised the outstanding efforts by members of the tourism sector that led to Laos being awarded a number of prizes by international organisations in the past year.

Luang Prabang province was one of the most popular destinations amongst foreign visitors to Laos in 2007, with the majority interested in ecotourism, he noted.

In preparation for the increased number of tourists expected this year, the meeting selected representatives from the government and private tourist sectors to help identify and resolve issues and weaker areas, and to mobilise plans for improvements to the country's tourism industry.

“To impress foreign visitors with our service, we have to expand and strengthen our working relationships and coordination,” said Mr Somphong.

“We must build more facilities for travellers entering and leaving the country, and improve the overall quality of our services in order to attract more tourists and increase revenue for the country.”

He emphasised that the service sectors should work to create a better customer-orientated environment at tourist venues, and preserve tourist attractions by reducing the impacts on the natural, cultural and social environment.

The tourism industry plays a very important role in the country's economy. It generates sustainable incomes for Lao people and helps to remove people from the despair of poverty, said the Vice Chairman of the administration, Mr Soukaseum Bodhisane.

Mr Soukaseum also announced to the assembled media representatives and tourism operators that the world's most famous newspaper, the New York Times, recently named Laos as the top tourist destination for 2008.

The Travel Section of the newspaper collated information on the most attractive destinations in the world, and had placed Laos at number one of the 53 best places to visit this year, he said.

Since the country first began a tourism campaign in 1990-2000, the number of visitors to Laos has continued to increase rapidly. Annual foreign visitors to Laos topped 737,208 in 2002, and tourism has now become one of the nation's leading income earners.

The Lao National Tourism Administration is expecting more than one million visitors to Laos this year, generating around US$195 million.

Tourism sector to focus on service in Laos

Laos, the jewel of Indochina, is a popular tourist destination because of its tropical climate, its spectacular beauty, and its friendly people. When you plan your next vacation, you should definitely place Laos on your short list of places to visit.

Laos - Land of Vibrant Vegetation

Laos shares its borders with China, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Mountains and plateaus cover three-quarters of the land, and its scenic beauty makes tourism in Laos an important industry. Laos boasts vast areas of untouched tropical rain forest, making it an ideal destination for travelers who love wildlife and the outdoors. Many Laos tourism attractions give tourists a chance to interact with the unique Lao landscape and its inhabitants.

Although Laos is completely landlocked, the region offers plenty of recreational water attractions, thanks to the many streams and rivers that form a network of waterways across the land. It is estimated that Lao bodies of water provide 60% of all the water that enters the Mekong River system.

Wildlife In Laos

If you visit Laos, be sure to take a Mekong River tour, where you can see all three layers of the rainforest up close and observe the diverse plants and animals that call this country home. During the dry season in April and May, water levels are low and some river excursions are impossible to operate, so tourism in Laos is most popular between November and March.

The rainforests of Laos are home to an amazing variety of animals, and one reason tourism in Laos is so popular is because Laos is one of the last places left on earth to photograph wildlife in its natural habitat. Indigenous animals like leopards, mongoose, goats, monkeys and bears may be too shy to show themselves to visitors on a river excursion, the colorful birds of Laos will happily pose for some of the best wildlife pictures you’ll ever take. If you’re using a digital camera, be sure to bring plenty of backup batteries and memory cards on your trip, and never leave your hotel room without your camera.

The Lao People

Laos has a population of about 6 million people, and the friendly people are one reason that tourism in Laos is so popular. You will find the Lao people to be very open and amiable. They place a high value on respect and courtesy for others. As long as you are respectful and courteous in return, you will find the people very pleasant indeed.

The official language of the country is Lao, although in Laos, where tourism is prevalent, many natives also speak Vietnamese, French, and English.

HANOI, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Lao Airlines opened a new route between the World Heritage town of Luang Prabang and Kunming, capital city of China's Yunnan province to meet the need of growing tourism in the region, Lao newspaper Vientiane Times reported Monday.

"The opening of this new route (on Jan. 5) will mean we can better meet the demand and change in the tourism industry, as more tourists become interested in traveling to the region," said the deputy director of the airline Leuy Bounbandit.

In 2007, Luang Prabang province, home to the World Heritage site, welcomed 320,000 visitors, including 195,175 foreigners, and generated tourism revenues of about 80 million U.S. dollars, said deputy head of the Provincial Tourism Administration, Khamtanh Somphanvilay.

The province is expected to receive 500,000 visitors in 2010, 650,000 visitors in 2015 and 800,000 visitors in 2020, and gain tourism revenues of more than 200 million dollars in 2020, he said.

Now, Lao Airlines operates four flights a week between Vientiane capital and Kunming. The carrier, currently having three aircraft, plans to purchase a new MA60 plane in the near future.

Lao Airlines transported 251,000 passengers in 2005, over 275,000 in 2006, and 330,000 passengers in 2007, the newspaper said.

Laos Entry Visa-on-Arrival now valid for 30 days at all border crossing points and ports of entry.

Visas are needed for all except Japanese, Russian, Mongolian or ASEAN visitors to Laos. If you want to save time and convenience when arriving in countries which require visas, then it's better to get them before you leave home. You can apply to each country's Embassy (allow plenty of time)

Lao Visa Prices

The 30 day visa on arrival in the Lao PDR is available at all ports of entry in Laos including the three international airports of Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Pakse. You should try to have one photo.

Visa cost ranges from $20 (China) to $42 (Canada). Sweden is $31, $35 for the USA, UK and most of Europe, $40 for India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and $30 for Australia and other countries. The full list is on display at the Visa Application window or click here to view. Japanese, Russian and Mongolian visitors to Laos no longer need a visa and ASEAN country passport holders should not have to pay for a 15 day entry stamp.

US dollars in smaller denominations can be used freely in much of Laos, so try to arrive with enough US$ notes for your visa. Thai currency (baht) can also be used in Lao, but paying for a visa with baht is expensive, due to the bad exchange rate at Lao Immigration.

If you apply before the expiry date, visas can be extended for about $1 per day in Vientiane. The Immigration office is opposite Bangkok Bank in a road off Lane Xang Avenue, on the other side to the Morning Market. On the corner is the Joint Development Bank (JDB) head office which has an ATM booth, currently for VISA cards only. Most other ATMs around the city accept MasterCard too. See Lao Banking for more.

24 hours ATM in Vientiane

You can also obtain your Lao Visa in the USA in advance from Passport Visa Express, or from a Lao Embassy in your country. If you prefer to have all your visas in your passport before you arrive in the countries that require them, then visit the PassportVisasExpress.com website where you can also apply for a US Passport if you don't have one yet.

Note that many travellers entering Thailand from the Lao PDR or other country will not need a Thai visa.

Visa procedure at the Thai Lao Friendship Bridge, Nongkhai
Opening times are from 6 am to 10 pm. Unless you are unlucky and arrive just after a large tour group, the wait for your visa is usually 10 to 15 minutes.

TMB now has permanent 24 hour Thai baht ATMs just before Thai Immigration, for VISA, MasterCard etc. The next are on the Lao side several Km from the Bridge, outside three factories; these also accept VISA and Cirrus cards, but dispense kip, usable only within the Lao PDR.

* Visa on arrival facilities now exist at 14 land border crossings and river ports of entry to the Lao PDR from Thailand, China and Vietnam including Mittaphap (Friendship) Bridge & Nongkhai, Houayxay & Xiengkhong, Thakhek & Nakhonphanom, Savannakhet & Mukdahan, Vangtao & Xongmek, Namphao & Cautreo, Densavanh & Laobao, Naphao & Chalo, Boten & Bohane, Namkane & Namekane, Namsoue & Nameo and Paksane & Beungkane. We cannot confirm the Cambodia/Lao crossing points issue visas.

If you already have a visa for the Lao PDR in your passport, you only need to fill in an Arrival/Departure form (similar to the Thailand one) available in the arrivals area or from the Visa on Arrival window. Just ask for the form. Fill in both sections, using any guesthouse or hotel name (Lao Plaza, Novotel, Mekong) as your address – no one cares. Present the completed form with your passport at a Foreign Passports booth and you will be 'stamped in'. Make sure you get 30 days entry and not just 15 as previously.

If you don't yet have your Lao visa, DO NOT proceed to the Foreign Passports Arrivals Booth until you have applied for and received your visa. Ask for the two forms you need at the left hand Visa-on-arrival window. First, fill in the simple Visa Application form and hand it back together with your passport, one photo and the fee (there is a list of countries and fees ranging from $30 to $42 – see above) in US dollars cash. On weekends and holidays there is a $1 surcharge. Second, take a seat and complete and sign both halves of the Arrivals/Departure form. Wait 10 minutes or so until your name (or something resembling it!) is called from the right hand window, collect your passport with its (previously 15 but now) 30 day visa, and proceed to one of the Foreign Passports arrivals booths, where you will be processed. Check to make sure you are stamped in for thirty days and not fifteen as previously. Walk past Customs; they rarely stop foreign tourists unless they are carrying a lot of extra bags. At the Entry Fee booth pay 10 or 20 baht. The final stop is a uniformed official who briefly checks your passport and the entry receipts. Welcome to Laos!

If you want to stock up on imported liquor and cigarettes, you can buy freely at the Duty Free shops on the Lao side. However, liquor prices are much the same in town: very cheap compared to Thailand. Most people take a bottle of something when they go back to Nongkhai.

All you want to know about VISA to Laos 2008

This article may help you spend your US dollar wisely for your travel in 2008.
There are 10 countries in different part of the world that were awarded the cheapest destination 2007 by famous MSN travel magazine and here what they said about Laos:

Laos: Tranquility off the beaten track

Laos is one of the best bargains in Southeast Asia—and that's saying something, since most countries there are relatively cheap for travelers. Because tourism is only beginning to make inroads in Laos, visitors are not seen as mere revenue streams; locals extend a warm and genuine welcome.

Life moves at a languid pace in the former royal capital of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There, French colonial architecture coexists with dozens of graceful Buddhist temples, and monks in brilliant orange robes stroll the streets. You can find an inexpensive guesthouse for less than $20 a night; open-air cafes along the Mekong River offer absurdly cheap French and Lao specialties.

If you're backpacking, set off into the rugged countryside for caving, jungle trekking and a taste of traditional village life. In Xieng Khouang province, don't miss the "Plain of Jars," a mysterious field lined with hundreds of ancient stone urns.
